Cypress HouseWilliamstownResidential
In collaboration with Donald Gallagher

Built by: Clockwork Constructions

Photography: Tom Ross

Cypress House is an alteration and addition of a single storey house on a corner block in Williamstown. The proposed addition works with the existing fabric of the site as it slips in under the existing roofline while taking formal cues from the existing roof pitch. The proposal is a modest, eco addition for the clients to retire into. The timber cladding to the addition has all been sourced from old growth Cypress trees on a farm in regional Victoria, where the client grew up.

Macquarie Point Urban Precinct & StadiumHobartSpeculative: public & commercial
In collaboration with Donald Gallagher

This proposal adds to and links Hobart’s public parkland to a proposed AFL stadium and urban precinct. The land around, and under, the proposed sporting oval at Macquarie Point becomes public, civic and commercial space, used 365 days of the year.
While providing the city with a future hub for public transport infrastructure, the design concept doubles the usable space & triples the land value. A structure, with potential to be a hotel, floats above the concourse, providing cover to the seating inside, while there are multi-purpose opportunities underneath the “hill”. The design
showcases Hobart’s rugged, natural backdrop by remaining low and opening up to hug the cenotaph.

The renovation and fit out of a grand heritage house in Williamstown. The brief was to bring more light into the dark, cavernous house and provide a direct connection between the garden and the living spaces within tight heritage controls. The resulting design acts to restore and reinvigorate the existing dwelling, creating a diversity of spaces, small and large for the clients and their family to enjoy and expand in.

Hoa's House is the conversion of the 150 year old Kings Arms Hotel in North Melbourne into a three bedroom home. The existing two level office space was stripped back and transformed into a three story home, with plenty of storage and nooks for the clients extensive collection of furniture and objects. Curves and material changes divide up the awkward, tiny plan.

This proposal, ‘outHOUSE’, imagines a dwelling that can adapt and change with you through time. The overarching idea is to design only the framework or support structures of the house, providing the essential infrastructure (bathroom, kitchen, laundry and stairwell) and have the occupants fill in the rest as they require, exploring the notion of 'infrastructure as a generator'. The traditional concept of laneways as service spaces is flipped it to imagine them as habitable social spaces. A reinterpretation of the granny flat typology, outHOUSE targets first home buyers, designing a framework that puts the users in control of the building process and programming of spaces.

HBC is a brewery, bar and events venue in the iconic Red Shed in Hobart. It is part of the urban renewal of Macquarie Point. The design of the brewery works to celebrate, contrast and be in dialogue with the Red Shed. The adaptive re-use of the existing fabric of the Red Shed works alongside the robust new additions. The shed opens up to Macquarie Point, creating indoor-outdoor dining spaces, inviting greenery and hanging gardens into the brewery.

Cambuur stadium is the adaptive reuse of an empty soccer stadium in the Leeuwarden. The brief was to re-imagine Cambuur Stadium, car parking & training grounds, creating a space that can be enjoyed year round.

The proposal seeks to retain the existing sporting facilities and infrastructure, with the potential to continue its use as a stadium, while integrating alternate program, such as a marketplace, performance space, productive landscapes, co-working spaces and housing. The sporting ground was raised up to create dual surfaces that can accommodate different uses concurrently.

As part of the Leeuwarden Cultural Capital 2018, this intervention looked at the connection between the city and the water in an underutilised, disconnected area. The proposal facilitates the opportunity to activate and regenerate the urban condition, reconnecting people to the water and to their city, through small scale interventions.
Through new pathways, floating platforms, new outdoor spaces, water becomes a place for people to connect with and occupy. This expands the reach of the opera house and surrounding buildings beyond their boundaries and into the public realm.

House That She BuiltResearchResidential

House That She Built is a house proposed to be designed and built by an all female identifying team. The scope of the proposal is for a new build on a highly vegetated sloping site. Bordering a park, the design aims to touch the earth lightly, while offering views and connections with the outside. The living and sleeping areas of the house are separated by a generous deck, encouraging daily connections to its environment. Through passive design, a modest footprint and use of recycled materials, it is a highly energy efficient home.
